• Step Publishers Ghana 940_700

Brief History

In 1979, a monthly Christian magazine named Step began circulating in Kenya under the auspices of Youth for Christ International.  The magazine circulated to other parts of Africa, particularly Zimbabwe, Uganda, Ghana, and Zambia. Tim Stafford from the USA was the pioneer-missionary and managing editor/publisher.  He later handed over to Bedan Mbugua who, in turn, handed over to Haron Wachira.

In 1987, Haron Wachira handed over to Lawrence Darmani, a Ghanaian student in Kenya who was then an intern in the organisation.  In 1988, Lawrence Darmani handed over the operations to Connie Kisuku and returned home to establish Step Publishers in Ghana.

The first Step Magazine, Ghana edition, appeared on newsstands in June 1989.  Later, Step Publishers expanded operations to cover the publishing of books.  Today, in addition to publishing the magazine, books have become a key product of the company, supplying books to the Ministry of Education, Senior High Schools, Non-Formal Education, Ghana Book Trust and other institutions.

Step Publishers

The acronym STEP was not determined at the outset of the company’s establishment, but down the years, by its activities and presentations, the acronym has come to mean, Seeking To Encourage People.
Step Publishers is registered as a Company Limited by Guarantee (1988) and licensed to operate business in 1989.
Step Publishers is a Christian literature organisation set up with a mission and vision in mind and in our operations. Mission: To produce and distribute quality Christian literature for young people (and others). Vision: That by reading our literature, young people would cultivate a Christian identity, be drawn closer to God, and deal with issues confronting them through biblical perspectives.
Step Publishers is an autonomous organisation that operates as an independent entity. It is however affiliated to the Youth for Christ International, Africa, by its historical roots to the organisation as noted in the brief history below. By its Christian characteristics, Step Publishers is aligned to the basis of faith subscribed to by evangelical Christians worldwide.
