Brief History
In 1979, a monthly Christian magazine named Step began circulating in Kenya under the auspices of Youth for Christ International. The magazine circulated to other parts of Africa, particularly Zimbabwe, Uganda, Ghana, and Zambia. Tim Stafford from the USA was the pioneer-missionary and managing editor/publisher. He later handed over to Bedan Mbugua who, in turn, handed over to Haron Wachira.
In 1987, Haron Wachira handed over to Lawrence Darmani, a Ghanaian student in Kenya who was then an intern in the organisation. In 1988, Lawrence Darmani handed over the operations to Connie Kisuku and returned home to establish Step Publishers in Ghana.
The first Step Magazine, Ghana edition, appeared on newsstands in June 1989. Later, Step Publishers expanded operations to cover the publishing of books. Today, in addition to publishing the magazine, books have become a key product of the company, supplying books to the Ministry of Education, Senior High Schools, Non-Formal Education, Ghana Book Trust and other institutions.
